A Just War?

Check out this article. First of all let me say that I am in no way endorsing the site on which this article is found. However, it does bring up a topic that we discussed in class last week. Was WWI a just war? What were we fighting for and what did we achieve? Were the individual and collective sacrifices that were made worth what was "won"? To make this argument more relevant to our lives lets extend it to the current War on Terror. The same questions apply: What are we fighting for? Is it a just war? Will the sacrifices being made by the men and women in uniform be worthwhile or in vain? What do we hope to achieve through our actions in Iraq and Afghanistan? The site that the above article is posted on is calling for the abolition of war. Is war always wrong or is it a necessary evil? What things in life are worth fighting for or is there nothing that warrants this course of action? What would you be willing to fight for, if anything? Finally, what about the premise of this website that is calling for the abolition of war? Is that a possibility or is that a Utopian dream that ignores the realities of life on this planet? Let the debate begin.

  1. I think that war is a just cause when it directly effects the American people. Looking back, many Americans say that the war in Iraq shouldn't have begun, and I count myself among them, because they had no part in the 9/11 attacks. However, the war in Afganistan is a just war in my mind, because terrorists based in that area attacked our country and our ideals. Also, I don't agree with the United States "global police" policies because that's what leads people not to appreciate us anymore, and breeds future terrorists. Also, a war free world would never happen and if the United States fully decommisioned its' military we would quickly be attacked by many countries hoping to take our place as the only superpower in the world

  2. I believe that war is almost inevitable, even if some don't want to accept that fact. I don't think wars can be completely abolished, especially if there are threats to the American people. As DBrown said above me, a world free of war would leave our vulnerable homeland succeptible to countries that would love to hold the power that our country has. However, as for the War on Terror, I do think we were right for doing something about 9/11, but now I believe we are over in Afganistan just looking for more trouble that could further threaten America. As for a just war, I think it really just boils down to what a person's personal belief is; that there really isn't a definite yes or no for each war. Granted no lives should be lost in a war anyways, but if the war is declared for good, strong reasons, then I think that it's not a just war.

  3. I feel that war like Shannon said is not easily avoided. We cannot just easily move out of the way of an attacking nation. As WWI progressed our American ships were being sunk by German "U" boats. Theres no way anyone could just push aside the fact that American citizens were being killed just because the Germans saw our ships as a potential threat to their country. When war springs up there is no hiding the fact that innocent people are going to become casualties. No lives should be lost over disbelieves shared with just a few people. There are men and women out there for now and back in WWI that are brought there beyond their free will. Their only two options are to fight or to serve jail time. This enrages me because what happens to the ones that are forced and die. They are just forgotten like the rest. War in my eyes has both a purpose and no purpose at all. Wars are fought to gain something that both sides want. Why does this dispute have to explode into such a big outcome? I ask myself this every time i learn of wars. I wonder how this war or the next could easily have been turned around into a simple agreement and not have to be brought to war where innocent lives are being taken. In conclusion I want to get the point out that WWI along with many other wars in my eyes were just wars. like Harry Patch said, WWI was pointless in the eyes of the American.

  4. As others have said before me, I believe that war is unavoidable. While the idea that war should be abolished is a respectable ideal, the reality is that it is almost completely impossible. Few people want to see others lose their lives due to the fact that a war is taking place, but many accept the simple truth that wars are bound to happen. There are always going to be people who will start conflicts and in turn those conflicts must be disputed over until an end is reached, or in other words one side of the fighting "wins." What is worth fighting for? That question is a difficult one to answer as each person has a different idea as to what is in fact worth fighting for. In my opinion, any situation that affects the safety and well being of our nation would be one to fight against. It's a fact of life that wars exist. Some are small disputes within countries, while others incorporate many countries and its affects are on a global scale. There are different reasons for a war to be considered just, but the truth is that as long as the war is taking into consideration the long term affects and the overall well being of all the country's citizens, then the war is just. In the long run, lives are going to be lost, but typically a nation will choose wisely and keep its casualties low. Simply put, war is a sacrifice that a country must choose to make if its people's lives are in jeopardy. By going to war, soldiers put their lives on the line, but they do so with full knowledge of what they are doing; they're giving of themselves for the good of others. Some men and women serve in the military and that is their career. A problem would arise for these people if there were no more wars. Wars are a part of history and will continue to be a part of the future. Although, there are many mistakes that have been made in wars, most times the outcomes have been productive and good. I wish I could say that I see a future without wars, but I'm a realist and the probability of a future like that is slim to none.

  5. I'm not exactly sure my views on war. There are two extreme sides to this topic, and I'm just trying to listen to them. In WWI it was hard not to go to war. We had tried to make treaties with the German, but that did not stop them. We said the if they didn't stop sinking our ships, we would go to war. And that's what happened. But what if war had never started between the Austro-Hungarians and the Serbs? That was started by the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. Did war have to be the answer for that? I don't know, but it was for them. And no matter how much we speculate, we can't know anything for sure. Is war the answer for anything now? It depends, I guess. Losing lives is never a good thing, but if people want to die for their country because they think it's the right thing to do, you can't really stop them. Other countries have different views than ours. They don't have as much opinion on topics, and if they do, they can't share them. They have different beliefs, so that makes war different as well. If another country attacks another one, the latter would need to fight even if they were not pro-war. Innocent civilians would be killed, and having that happen because you don't want to go to war and have people die that want to for their country would be much worse. So, really in most cases you would probably go to war. There will always be people fighting and you can't stop it all. Even though this is a very sad thing, you can't really change it.

  6. I personally don't find a just cause for war. Killing people to gain something, it's not humane. I say this while accepting the fact that war is also completely unavoidable. Not to many people like the idea of war, but it does happen, and will. A world without war couldn't exist. As there is always that person out there searching for anyway to start trouble, and once trouble starts, it's a snowball affect from there on. War cannot be abolished. You cannot tell a person that war is not an option. Nothing would ever get solved. In a sick sort of way, war has solved, as well as created, many problems for America. As far as WWI being a just war, as I stated before I don't see any war as just. We went in, won, and got back what was ours and our allies, as well as conquered those who deserved it. It happened, it was mostly unavoidable, but I don't find it just. Now for The War on Terror, we certainly needed to go. Especially after how America was threatened with the attacks on 9/11. It was the only way to keep America safer from further damage, and threats. Although, I don't think we needed to stay as long we have. War will happen, but that doesn't make it a just cause. Some people may see it this way but, I see it as an unavoidable way to keep innocent people safer from threats and danger

  8. I think that war in some cases in correct but in other cases not. Some wars can not be avoided but others could be controlled.I think that Americans are the reason for our wars cause we cant control the economy and how we are reacting!!!!! If America were to control ourselves and make peace with the other nations, the flow of the society balance would be better.

  9. I think WW1 was a just cause and what we did was right. We world fight to make this world safe for democracy but they started sinking our ships and we were not going to take that. They stopped for a while and than found no reason to stop so they started sinking our ships again. We got an army in 12 weeks and took them down.

It's good that our men in Iraq are there. We can't just leave and than let our men die in vain. We would rather have our men and women in Iraq fighting than have us retreat and something like 9/11 happen again. I agree with our men and women being in Iraq

  10. I think that we really helped in WW1 and it was a good decsion to send our men over. it helped to make the world a safe place for democracy. Our part in the war was fought because the Germans broke the pledges they made and kept sinking boats with American people on them. Our war today in Iraq is good beuase we're helping the Iraq people make themselves strong enough so we can leave and the people won't be overthrown by a stronger leader.

  11. I think that it was necessary for us to join the first world war. They were sinking our ships and killing our men even though we had done nothing mean to them. So it wasnt our fault, they provoked us. The war in Iraq is necessary too because they have a corrupt country and crazy people who blow people up. So we are just there to keep the Iraqi citizens safe.

  12. I think that war in general is a bad idea, because it kills people and breaks apart families. All wars could be prevented by peaceful negotiations, I believe that we should stop the wars in Afganistan and Iraq, and try to negotiate with the terrorists. Also, with the draft it killed many young men who could have lived fruitful, successful lives to better our country and not waste their lives for an unjust war!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think if it comes down to keeping AMERICA safe that war is justified. Where would we be today without the courageous people that have volunteered to do the ultimate sacrifice for his/her family and total strangers for that matter. I do not believe in the draft however. I think that if the war in Iraq/Afghanistan is what needs to be done to help prevent another September 11, and our men and women are willing to go over there and do what they need to do to keep us safe then all we can do is support and thank them everyday. After all who else would step up and fight for us? GOD BLESS AMERICA

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think that we shouldnt bring war on anybody unless ABSOLUTELY nessecary! I think like Robert said negotiation is the best way to go at it.But I also think that it's good to have a strong military and to expect the worst so we dont end up loosing our free country. I think war should be avoided as much as possible, and to save as much lives as possible.

  15. I believe that this was a just war because “self-defense against an armed attack is always considered to be a just cause” and also “A war can only be just if it is fought with a reasonable chance of success.” I think the war was an act of self defense most defiantly and although it didn’t seem that we would be victorious at first, our will power kept us going which shows that we had a chance. We were fighting to prove a point which needed to be done. If this had not happened things would have progressively gotten worse. The sacrifices made were necessary for those who believe in self defense. Even though many lives were lost, they were and will not be lost in vain. We fought for what we thought was necessary and I am glad we did. War is not something we should look to resort to but if things won’t let up and innocent people are getting hurt for no reason you need to protect your neighbors. Through Iraq and Afghanistan we hope to conquer what we have been fighting and come home victorious because there is no backing away now. War is not always wrong however, it doesn’t mean it’s always necessary. I would be willing to fight for what I believe in no matter what it is. It is a utopian dream if others think ignoring reality will make it better. Sometimes you need to be strong and fight for what you want and need. That’s why I believe this was a just war.

  16. We entered both WWI and the War on Terror when innocent men and women of America were being killed. I think this is the only reason we need in order to enter into a war. Hundreds of Americans were killed on the ships that the Germans sunk, thousands of Americans were killed on 9/11. We had no choice but to intervene and try and take control of the situation so that no more innocent civilian lives were threatened. It is better to act upon a situation versus doing nothing at all. If President Wilson hadn’t asked permission to go to war we would have been like sitting ducks and odds are we would have lost a lot more lives. I think that the lives of Americans are worth fighting for and those men and women that have served and are currently serving in the military are defending our country and protecting the citizens of America. Being a soldier is one of the most admirable jobs to have. Even though many lives have been lost, they have not been lost in vain. Part of war is sacrifice and those men and women are making the ultimate sacrifice in order to protect our country. In conclusion, WWI was a just war and America should be proud of all the men and women that helped us pull through.

  17. I think there is no reason for war and we should try to avoid it as much as possible. There has to be other ways that nations can work through their problems. War affects everyone. We lost thousands of men and women in WW1. Although we should try to avoid war I think it's important to have a strong military for a back up plan just in case we need one. When soldiers come back from war they are not the same. War rips families apart piece by piece.

  18. Is any war just? Yes, if a direct attack is made to a country than it makes sense to defend it. Or if counter measure need to be taken to stop a greater evil such as WW2 with Hitler. But the idea of war to settle family rivalris, such as the German, Russian, and English cousins in WW1 seems ridiculous. The cause of WW1 was one man being assinated, why did every country in the world have to get involved? The war could have been avoided or at least minimalized to keep it between the two countries involved. But instead because of already formed alliences every country had to get involved, than the family feud between cousins took the war to a much higher level of casualties. War in general is a negative thing, there are some circumstances when it is acceptable, but I do not think WW1 was a just war.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I believe under certain circumstances going to war is a just thing. As in the case of WW1 where innocent civilians were being killed, that’s a just reason to go to war. In our constant “War Against Terror”, I don’t think going to war with any country would be just until innocent lives are taken. It’s kind of like “an eye for an eye.” We have Army volunteers for a reason, because there are people in this country willing to defend it. So, I don’t think any lives lost defending our country would be in vain. But negotiating would obviously be a more humane way of dealing with those types of things. And that’s the way problems with foreign countries should be dealt with, until innocent people are hurt.

  20. War is definitely something that should not be taken lightly. When you go to war, you're putting the lives of many people on the line, so you better have a good reason for doing it. If a country is defending itself, that is a good reason. Another good reason would be if peoples' rights are being infringed upon. There are probably many more scenarios in which war would be appropriate, but those are just a couple examples. There is no way to avoid war because not everyone is ever going to be happy at the same time. The idea that the world could just simply be peaceful is ignorant because it is impossible. There will always be problems. The factor we can control is what we choose to fight over.

  21. I am writing again for a secnod time today and third time in general. This is my god honest truth on war. No war is a just war. We fight for "freedom" according to the government, but freedom isn't free. I know that we have it better off here than alot of other countries do, but were selfish. All we do is want, want, want. I'll admit that there are groups and rights movements to help others in need. Again I'll say we are selfish, as a race we have become used to having a higher standard we are 3rd most obise country in the world and others are starving. If we didn't always want want want than we could share and end world hunger, but again were selfish so we go in and invade other country's for things that are not a basic nesseside. In my conclusion no war is a just war.

  22. I would like first to address the question, "Is war always wrong or is it a necessary evil?" because my answer will be relevant to what is said henceforth. War is not necessary. Period. Any would be war could just as well be settled by diplomatic means. There are many people who have gone to great lengths to bring peace to the Earth, but the part of human nature which is as one with conflict is too much a burden to bear for the pacified heart. War is not a necessary evil, but surely an assured one. WWI, was just or un-just, depending on your perspective. Personally, I disagree with the idea of imperialism, and I do not think that empires should be able to annex previously otherwise-ruled or free states. As strongly as I believe that life is sacred (I could certainly never take it willfully myself) I don't think that the losses experienced during WWI were worth the spoils by any means, although I would never call any sacrifice for a cause one believes to be just in vain. The War on Terror is justified by some reasonings and dejustified by others. As the son of a National Guard member who has served two terms in the Middle East I'm aware that most of the work done by the armed forces in that area is not destructive, but on the contrary, creational. Wells and schools, housing and bridges are built; and this would be a beautifully just objective for any outside force to attempt if it, in itself, was not a form of imperialism. The American mark will be left on the economy in those areas of the Middle East for decades. War is never conducted on the principle of altruism, and this, I believe prevents the act of war itself from ever being just.

  23. I believe that WWI was not started for any issues worth fighting for but America joined the war for a just cause. The Germans were sinking american ships and sent mexico the Zimmerman note telling mexico to attack us.

  24. I believe we entered both WWI and the War on Terror for good reasons because innocent Americans and other people were being killed. I do not believe in starting a war over anything but if citizens are being killed and our freedom is being tested, than I think we should retaliate. One of the reasons why we entered WWI was the Germans were the sinking of our passenger ships and I think this is a good reason to fight back. Also, we entered the War on Terror because thousands of innocent Americans were killed during the 9/11 attacks and other incidents. If we did not intervene in these situations than we may have been seen as week and have other countries try and take over us. I also think the sacrifices being made by the men and women fighting the War on Terror will be worthwhile because we are trying to eliminate terrorism and showing other groups we will not let them kill our citizens without some sort of retaliation. My view on the abolition of war is that it is a good theoretical idea but do not think it will ever happen in the real world. We may try and solve compromise without wars but it will always be there.

  25. I think that the US had sound reasons for joining both WW1 and The War on Terror. Innocent people were being killed and that's never okay. Thus both wars occurred.

WW1 is interesting to me because it all seems to stem from an assassination attempt. I'd like to believe that if people had called meetings instead of calling for weapons the war could have been avoided or shortened significantly. Though through WW1 we were able to abolish empires and create diplomatic republics, a good thing, it's very saddening that it had to come to such a terrifying boiling point called WW1.

As for The War on Terror I think the US was completely justified in joining the fight against the terrorists. They attacked us on 9/11 and killed innocent people in buildings and planes. By invading Iraq we were able to overthrow their dictator, Saddam Hussein, and relieve the people's oppression and fear. This was a very good thing. We also have made major progress with removing the Taliban by killing Osama Bin Laden. One thing that is a problem with The War on Terror is that it will never end. No matter how big our military is we cannot find and kill every terrorist in the world. It's impossible. Also the unrest in the Middle East is almost guaranteed to never cease. The different religious groups fighting over their perceived holy land will never end. No matter there will always be religious extremists. I think that the infinite time period is a major issue with The War on Terror.

War itself I think sometimes is necessary. Some people cannot be just talked out of things. Hitler is a prime example. I highly doubt he would just compromise on how many people he would kill. No, he would kill them all no matter what. Thus military force is needed to prove that people cannot be doing these sort of things. Though I support war I believe that it should be a last resort. When all other options have failed then one may consider declaring war. War is a double edged sword and one must be extremely careful when using it.

  26. When we entered WWI and the War on Terror we did it for just reasons. I don't really like war and the idea of it, but we did end up helping out innocent citizens that were being targeted. In WWI we entered because Germany was sinking our passenger ships. I believe that entering a war for that reason is a good idea. If other countries are endangering and hurting innocent citizens, then that needs to stop. But overall, I don't believe that WWI was a just war. It was started for problems that could have been solved with things other than war. We entered for a good reason, but we shouldn't have even had to enter because I don't believe it should have started in the first place. Some things can be solved through war, and some things can't. Not a lot of things were solved through this war, but with the War on Terror I believe some things were solved and helped. We started the War on Terror because of the attack on 9/11 and some other significant incidents. Terrorists were endangering innocent citizens lives and that's a big issue. We did end up stopping a leader in all of this and we did some good in the Middle East, but the war over there seems to be never ending. We started it for a just reason, but the wars don't need to drag on. Wars aren't the only way of solving problems. So, overall I don't really like the idea of war but, in some cases its necessary and in others it isn't. I think its really important to think about all the reasons for going into war and asking if its really necessary.

In the article it said that war needs to be abolished. In the real world, I don't really think that can happen. I still think that there are some things worth fighting for like our freedom and safety. I really believe that the abolition of war can really only be a Utopian dream.

  27. I personally believe that we went into WWI with good reasons. Europe was being destroyed and so many people were dying. We were being effected when we tried to stay out of it and we were not going to just let that happen. So we went into the war and our reasons were not bad or immoral. When America came into the war we helped end it and win. There was a good chance that the Allies would have lost and Germany would have taken a lot of land and gained a lot of power in the world.

As much as I believe, looking at the facts on paper, that this was a just war I do not believe that I have the right to determine if it was or not. None of the Civilians today have that right. I would want to hear more of what the soldier of WWI had to stay about it. They lost comrades and friends, they put their lives at risk, they saw the turmoil and they lived the war. They could judge if it was truly a just war and worth everything that the world had to go through.

We did not go into WWI for no reason. We had good reasons but I cannot tell if that’s enough to make up for everything lost.

  28. I personally think when we entered WWI and the War on Terror, we did it with the grace of our hearts. We didn't do it for us it was to help other people in need of assistance. I feel we did the right thing on goiing over seas and helping to make our allies a stronger force at first. Although we did lose alot of soldiers in that war we were still able to limit our casulties. I don't think war is unneccesary but I would rather have our brothers and our sisters come home to be with their families. Americans leaving all the places we are deployed to would make it better but then we wouldnt be helping out others that need our help. Altough it is unfortunate that those of who serve our country aren't around that often it makes it so much better when they do come home even if it is for a short while. I feel WWI and The War On Terror made things better but thats my opinion. Our WWI veterns were the strongest in my eyes because those who did survive came back shell shocked and may have lost limbs from trench foot but they did it for the good of their country.

  29. I don’t personally think that WWI was a just war, but there are many people who do. WWI abolished the large empires and created nine new countries and changed the borders of some pre-existing ones. This is the cause of some of the major disagreements still happening today, because the border lines grouped people together that don’t necessarily have the same beliefs and customs. Getting rid of the empires and creating democratic republics was something positive that came from the war though. Also think of how powerful Germany might be today if they weren’t stopped by America and France causing an end to the war. Although massive numbers of lives were lost in WWI I do believe the war was worth fighting to stand up for people’s freedoms and rights.

  30. I think that both the War of Terror and World War One were both just wars. We had innocent Americans being killed which it is our duty to protect our fellow Americans and give them freedom. If we hadn't reacted to these conflicts of war, more innocent Americans would have been killed. Both wars were both worthy of putting lives of armed forces on the line as i said before we needed to save Americans and to do that we need to sacrifice others.
We also saved not only Americans but Jews and other nationalities by fighting in World War One. We came together with our allies and stopped the power of Germany and Austria-Hungarian Empire and ended the war. We saved many people by entering both these wars.
We should be proud of what we did.

  31. I would like to believe that America would never go into a war in vain. The war on terror that we are fighting today I believe was not started just because. Our country was attacked in 9/11 and killed many of our fellow Americans, so it makes sense that we went and defended our country. I mean could you imagine if we didn't? We may have lost many more people on our soil. Now I also believe we did not go into WW1 without reason. People were being discriminated on because of their religion, and an empire was trying to be formed. Innocent people were being stripped of everything, even their pride. How could we have stood back and watched? It's almost like saying we condone what the Germans were doing. I think there is a purpose for our action, and I stand behind it.

  32. The only thing is solves is population control having millions die each year. The men and women in uniform are dying for nothing. Without Jehovah's leadership and satan being the way he is, there will always be evil until the new system comes and Jehovah steps in to save his people from the wrong doings. War is just another wrong doing that won't last much longer. People hope to achieve getting vengeance and controlling terrorism which is pointless. There is never a necessary evil. Evil is always unwanted in the world and shouldn't even be thought of as "necessary". Being true to Jehovah is worth fighting for but it does not involve us humans fighting a battle that is no ours. The battle that is being fought in heaven is between Jehovah, Jesus, and Satan along with his demons and Jehovah's angles. That is their war and Jehovah will make sure that his people will not get caught in the crossfire while Satan is just using his people on earth as pawns and as soon as they get caught, Satin leaves them to die, making them think they died for a good reason or no reason. Just like war. Its Satins game of chess. I will fight for being truthful to Jehovah and not to a flag or to a man. They are children along with me and all the other people on earth. They are no higher nor no lower. I will do what is right in Jehovah's eyes and never participate in Satan's game. For Jehovah's promise of everlasting life with perfection of human and earth is much more better then what this system has to offer.

  33. War doesn't solve anything its just a way to legally kill innocent people. There is nothing gained by it. They say we are fighting for freedom but freedom isn't free. Alot of people have to die in the process. We are never going to be free from War because if the government keeps sticking their noses in other countries problems then we end up in War. We can never pull all our troops out of Afghanistan or Iraq. They don't have the ability to stop terrorism. Nothing is worth someones life.

  34. I think that we couldn't really avoid WWI. There were so many alliances and written documents between most of the countries that no matter what there was going to be a war. We weren't necessarily the smartest group to just randomly go in and try to help. I honestly think we help too much with everyone else's problems. That's what America does. We stick our noses in other countries business and try to fix it, and usually do but it takes a while to fix such complicated problems. I think we get in over our heads and have a hard time getting out. That's why we are in debt, I think, and why we are almost always at war. We anger the country we are against and they just keep fighting for what they think is "right". This is what causes terrorist attacks. They go over the edge a lot of the time with killing but its just how they think. I mean don't mistaken me I'm not defending them at all. I'm just trying to understand it all.

  35. In all honesty I think whether or not it was a just war is up to the people who chose to fight in it. I'm not sure that I would say it was just. I believe it helped out Americans by making jobs and making allies with countries throughout the world. Now I believe we have set a high standard for ourselves when it comes to helping other countries. I'm not quite sure what we were trying to achieve with this war but it ended up helping the economy and relations with other countries. The current war we are fighting isn't fighting for a clear objective in my opinion. Yes, we are fighting terrorism but when do we say we have won. We are fighting more of an Ideology than a physical form of something. We are sort of spreading ourselves thin with this war. Yet again I think whether or not its worth soldiers lives is up to them. Is the abolition of war possible? I don't know for sure but in my mind it is human instinct to fight or to show up another human being. Also all people are different, from their religion to their raising to the way they live their lives. Unless we all believe in one thing it could be impossible for us not to fight.

  37. I think WWI was justified, but not as much as other wars. First off, we Americans just focused on Germany, we didn’t pay attention to the other central powers like the A-H Empire, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire. We did one thing that was right, we stopped the Germans from expanding into France. We eventually won the war when the Germans asked for an armistice and we created Poland, the Balkan countries, Yugoslavia, and more. The problem is that nothing else was achieved except the Great Depression, which left America, England, and others with billions of dollars of loans. Also, many people believe that if WWI didn’t happen, then WWII might have not happened. I think WWI was justified because if we hadn’t come help France, the Germans would have probably taken over France, then Great Britain, and who knows what else. They would’ve kept sinking ships with their U-Boats and the Mexicans might have claimed their land back from the Mexican War with the Germans. Also, it a fair reason for the A-H Empire to declare on Serbia for the assassination of the Archduke, but they could’ve handled it a different. It’s just like Pearl Harbor. That was a good reason for America to enter WWII. WWI was a justified/unjustified war. There are some unjustified reasons for this war. We only achieved peace for 21 years, caused the Great Depression, and WWII.

  38. I think war in some circumstances is okay. We may lose some people in the progress but with the way our country is looked at now we can't just pull out of everything. If we backed out now our allies would feel betrayed and our enemies may take it as a sign of weakness. Although I think war is needed in some cases, I really don't recommend it. I also don't think that wars will ever truly stop. There will always be disagreements between people whether it be about there beliefs, or if they just plain want to try taking over other countries. Another topic I don't think will ever end is terrorism (which goes along with war). Although I think acts of terrorism could have been prevented against the United States have we had kept to ourselves a little more. Something related to this topic is like the Syrians using chemical weapons on their own people. We don't need to get into their business, it's their fault they cant control their own people and really has nothing to do with our country's well being. If they gas their own people, how is that affecting us? It doesn't! So why cause more problems with another group of people when it has nothing to do with us. People say it will make us look weak and make some country think they can over turn us but I think it will make us look like we don't care about insignificant things such as this. I also think it would make us look almost tougher because it seems like we are looking down on those people, making them think they are nothing to us and that it would be a waste of our time to do so. So in the end, I don't ever think absolute peace can be achieved around the globe. There will always be at least two countries in disagreement with eachother.

  39. The case about “Sybil” in my opinion seems very complicated in a way where there is so many strange things I can’t understand. This case was very detailed for me to actually know if she really had 16 different personalities. Watching the movie Sybil, she had a very traumatic childhood and it seemed to haunt her in a way where it became to be a part of her alters to get rid of her past. I think Sybil really had this disorder as it was proven that she would act very differently to people and Dr. Wilbur. Dr. Wilbur was defiantly there to help Sybil and how she would have all these personalities because of the alters to forget her past that affected her life in the future. I also think that not telling the world what “Sybil's” real name really helped her as a person so she could get better having her disorder as a young adult. I think all the traumatic and strange information being told after she had past was to give people a heads up on that people can really get multiple personality disorders. These kinds of disorders can really happen, even though they are very rare, knowing about them can still help you be aware if you ever come across to it, just to be prepared if you go through something like this. Dr. Wilbur really spent years and years trying to get Sybil’s personalities out of her so Sybil could know what was going on with her. Sybil needed to know why she was having these blackouts and why her alters were taking her away for so long. When Sybil finally realized why she was having blackouts and not remembering where she was really helped her move on in her life. Dr. Wilbur is a very great psychiatrist in my opinion because she spend years trying to figure out why Sybil acted the way she acted. She never gave up on helping Sybil and that's the way all psychiatrists should be like if someone needs help. At the end of the movie I think that it all came a good ending of how she figured out what was really happening. It may have been a little strange on how she figured out who her alters were but at least she won't be having her 16 different personalities that really messed up the way she acted. After all I think that this case study had its strange times. It's a very detailed movie for me to know if some stuff is true especially with her family. Questions still come to my mind like, how did her dad not know her mom was beating her, was there bruises to prove it? Why was he (The Father) never home? How did Sybil’s Grandmother not know, from Sybil crying or screaming from downstairs? So many things question me. This is how I really felt about this movie, it’s such a sad thing for anyone and I am glad in the end things came together for Dr. Wilbur and Sybil.
